The following is a report on the family of James Murrell of Hadleigh, Essex.

He is better known as “Cunning Murrell".  The man who supposedly dealt with witches.  He also had connections to the village of Canewdon, Essex.

 

 

PART 1:   The Murrell family of Hadleigh and Canewdon, Essex:

 

First Generation:

 

JAMES MURRELL  (1781 - 1860)

James Murrell was born in Rochford, Essex and lived most of his life in Hadleigh, Essex.   James married Elizabeth ---?---.   This person is known as the Cunning man Murrell of Hadleigh.

 

 

Second Generation:

 

ELIZA ANN MURRELL  (1818 - ?)

Eliza was born in Hadleigh, Essex and was a daughter of James and Elizabeth Murrell.  Eliza married James Leggett.

 

EDWARD MURRELL  (1823 - 1903)

Edward was born in Hadleigh, Essex and was a son of James and Elizabeth Murrell.  He was an Agricultural Laborer.

 

LOUISA WHITWELL MURRELL  (1830 - ?)

Louisa was born in Hadleigh, Essex and spent some time in Canewdon, Essex and was a daughter of James and Elizabeth Murrell.  Louisa married 1st. William Spendell, and then 2nd. Robert Felton.

 

ELEANOR MURRELL  (1835 - ?)

Eleanor was born in Hadleigh, Essex and was a daughter of James and Elizabeth Murrell.   Eleanor married Elijah Barker.

 

 

Third Generation:

 

SUSANNAH WHITWELL SPENDELL  (1849 - ?)

Susannah was born in Canewdon, Essex and was a daughter of William Spendell and Louisa Whitwell Murrell.  Susannah married James Clements.

WILLIAM SPENDELL  (1850 - ?)

William Spendell was born in Canewdon, Essex and was a son of William Spendell and Louisa Whitwell Murrell.  William was an Agricultural laborer.
