SHATTOCK - ALLERTON:  On the 2d inst., at S. James’, Piccadilly, by the Rev. W.J.B. Webber, of Demerara, Henry Foster, eldest son of Henry Mark Shattock, Esq. of Silverton House, Peckham-rye, to Charlotte Rice, only daughter of James George Rice Allerton, Esq., of Harling, Essex.

According to this, they were married on October 2, 1860 at St. James’, Picadilly.

 

Henry Foster Shattock was born ca. 1831 in Bermondsey, Surrey.   He was the oldest son of Henry Mark Shattock.

 

In the early 1860’s, Henry and Charlotte Shattock were living in Peckham Rye, Surrey.  By 1866, they were living in Croydon, Surrey.

 

In 1871, Henry and Charlotte Shattock were living at Thornton Heath, 1 Bentham Villas in Croydon, Surrey.  Henry was a Stock and Share dealer.

34.          EUSTACE C. SHATTOCK   was born in 1866 in Croydon, Surrey.

In 1871, Eustace C. Shattock, age 5, scholar, was living with his parents in Croydon, Surrey (see above under the parents for census details).

In 1891, Eustace C. Shattock, age 25, a Stock and Share Broker, was living with his parents in Brompton, Kensington, London (see above under the parents for census details).

 

 

35.          MONTAGUE MANCHA SHATTOCK  was born in October 9, 1867 in Broad Green, Croydon, Surrey.

In 1871, Montague M. Shattock, age 3, was living with his parents in Croydon, Surrey (see above under the parents for census details).

In 1881, Montagu M. Shattock, age 13, scholar, was living with his parents in Croydon, Surrey (see above under the parents for census details).

In 1891, Montague M. Shattock, age 23, a Stock and Share Broker’s Clerk, was living with his parents in Brompton, Kensington, London (see above under the parents for census details).

In 1901, Montague M. Shattock, age 33, a Stock & Share Dealer, was living with his parents in Brompton, Kensington, London (see above under the parents for census details).

 

From a great website, there is information that Montague Mancha Shattock was in the military since 1892 into the early 1900’s.  When World War I broke out, Montague re-enlisted and was back to his unit.  While in France, he was killed in action on January 8 or 9, 1915 in the trenches near River Lys, Armentieres, France.  He was buried there behind the trenches.

From de Ruvigny’s Roll of Honour 1914-18 Part 1, pages 323-324 and Extracts from the Stock Exchange Memorial Book:

SHATTOCK, MONTAGU DE MANCHA, Capt., No. 4 Coy., 16th Battn.  (Queen’s Westminster Rifles) The London Regt. (T. F.), 3rd s. of Henry Foster Shattock, member of the London Stock Exchange, by his wife, Charlotte Rice (88A, Lexham Gardens, Kensington, W.), dau of James Allerton; b. Broad Green, Croydon, co. Surrey, 9 Oct. 1867; educ. St. John’s, Hurstpierpoint, and King’s College, London, and was afterwards a member of the Stock Exchange since around 1889.

1892 November - enlisted in the Queen’s Westminsters.

1902 April 5 - became 2nd Lieut.

1903 June 6 - promoted to Lieut.

1905 March 21 - promoted to Captain and appointed Musketry Instructor to the Regiment.

1905 - An enthusiastic, popular and influential officer, he captained the team of the “Queen’s” which defeated the 7th New York National Guard at Bisley (or Risley?) in 1905, and which visited New York for the return match in the following year.

1913 - Retired at the age of 46

1914 August 5 - World War I broke out and Montague immediately rejoined and was with his company again.

1914 November - Posted to the 1st Batttalion in France.  His Commanding Officer wrote “It was with the greatest pride and thankfulness that we received him back … a much-loved and valued comrade”.

1915 January 8 or 9 - Killed in action by a sniper’s bullet through the head in the trenches near River Lys, Armentieres, France.   “Poor old Mont, we all miss him fearfully”, wrote a brother officer.  “The only consolation is that he died a hero’s death”. “We all in the mess loved Montie”, wrote another. “Out here he was a very pattern of cheerfulness”.

 

 

36.          HAROLD A. SHATTOCK   was born in 1871 in Croydon, Surrey.
