Charles Pickingill ( 1790 – 1867 )
~ 1790
1. CHARLES PICKINGILL was born in ca. 1790 in Canewdon, Essex, England.
At this moment it is not known who are the parents of Charles Pickingill.
Research Notes:
First theory - is that Charles was a son of Thomas and Martha Pickingill but they didn’t get around to baptizing Charles. But Thomas Pickingill was very active with the church of Canewdon, I doubt that they would of forgotten to have Charles baptized. Or what if he was their son but was baptized in a different church?
Second theory - that Charles was an illegitimate child of one of Thomas Pickingill’s children. But one problem here is that in 1790, the children of Thomas and Martha are of the following ages - Sarah 16, Samuel 14, Thomas 12, Mary 10, John 8, Martha 6, and Catherine 8.
Daughter Sarah did have an illegitimate daughter baptized in 1792. So it is possible that she had a son born while she was age 16 in 1790.
Third theory - could Charles be an illegitimate son of the church man Thomas Pickingill himself ?
Fourth theory - Charles may have been from possible brothers of Thomas Pickingill ? The fact that Thomas Pickingill is the first of the family in Canewdon, he actually came from somewhere else. And the same for his wife Martha whose maiden name was Martha Cliver. No other Cliver entries shows up in Canewdon, so it is likely that she also came from somewhere else.
Fifth theory - Charles may have been adopted in the family and if he was already baptized under a different name there wouldn't be a need to be baptized again.
Further research is needed, such as checking surrounding parishes of Canewdon for any other Pickingill baptisms.
